I'm OK while at home connected to my wifi. I'm usually ok while at large, connected via my mobile broadband.

But today for a while, while in one specific location, I was banned.

Error message was simply: your ip address has been banned.

Probably not a problem. It will be that the ip address was recycled having once been issued to a naughty person. But if the forum software ever starts linking people to ip address, which I know it already does to some extent, I might simply vanish from gc land.

I'm very naughty (and always have been), but how will GC find out and ban me (oh dear, too late, I've admitted it).

Hi Scrungee, it's not you that's been naughty but somebody who was using your ISP. It's probably my actions this afternoon when banning a naughty person and his/her ISP. So it's not the Forum system but the manual action of us either rejecting someone unsuitable or someone banned who's tried to slip in under the radar using the same ISP as you........my apologies.
          That won't happen

I know this is a stupid question but these "naughty people" what are they actually doing? because if they've got half a brain they can easily just pay £4.99 a month and have access to any numerous proxy services or VPN's to obscure or completely hide their actual IP making an IP ban completely pointless

I'd love to answer that question, ICR, but it's an Admin matter and our rules and protocols don't let us discuss such subjects on the open forum.:dunno::snorky: You're right about them not using their brain, but that's up to them. As it is it's an ongoing thing and we hope to put an end to the issue fairly soon as it's causing the Admin Gang to work just as we're handing out the Hobnobs and reaching for a mug of Tea.:wallbanging::snorky:

@clueless1 - long shot, but I don't suppose you checked what your IP address was at the time when you were unable to access the site?

Sorry no. It didn't occur to me at the time.

Perfectly understandable - not exactly the sort of thing you would go looking for. As you will no doubt have seen, we have been having some problems with a certain element that resulted in some IP addresses being banned - however, it appears that some dynamic IP's were also added to the banned list, hence the problem you are seeing. I think it is mostly O2 and Three networks where we are seeing the problem.

Makes sense. I'm on three. I figured that's what it was, but I thought I'd mention it just because although I know I wasn't banned, I also know that ip addresses are logged against users. I figured there is a possibility that a future update to the forum software or its plugins might automatically start banning users who have at any time been associated with a banned ip address.

Definitely not happening thankfully - at the moment, we are going through a process to reverse any IP bans that are flagged up to us where it is clear that it has been a dynamic IP that has been banned. If you have a similar problem again, if you could try and find out what your device's IP address is at the time, and that will let us reverse the ban on that IP

For those having issues logging in if you unplug your home router for 5 minutes and then plug it back in you should get a new IP address

I start getting withdrawal symptoms if I have to wait about 90 seconds for my router to reboot after it crashes.
