My waterbutt is empty and there is still no rain in sight. I've had to resort to tap for my veg patch for the last four days now. Anyone know when the rain is coming back???

According to Mr Kandy,he says that on our local radio station this morning it said that for us in the Midlands we are going to get heavy rain tomorrow. [IMG] Lets see if they are right. We have just got back from our local large sailing pond and you can already see exposed tree roots that are usually submerged under water and the overflow bit by the dam was completley dry.It brought out the people in their masses and the ice cream man had quite a long queue of people lined up :D

Sorry Mrs Bobs but it seems as though we are going to be dry for a while yet. I've got a useless butt as well. :D :D

Last year when they brought in the hosepipe ban I told the water authority and the government that their idea of using water butts to save an enormous amount of water was a load of drizzle. I pointed out that when we have a drought there is no rain [IMG] [IMG] hence empty water butts. I also said that saving 'grey' water was only a drop in the ocean in terms of saving water.

Guess what they said? The government said that imposing hosepipe bans was at the request of the water companies and none of their doing and the water company said that they applied for the ban because the government had suggested it. [IMG] [IMG]

Don't you just love beaurocracy? [IMG] :D

Shiney,Our downpipes from the roofs go directly into the drains as is the way of new builds. If we have waterbutts then they would have to stand on the paths which run around the house so we wouldn't be able to walk past without diverting onto the garden. The only place where we can have a butt sensibly is on the garden to catch some water from the garage roof and forgoing part of a flower bed.We would then have to cut into the down pipe and fit one of those diversion pieces of kit that would allow the water to run into the butt

    :D

I have two water butts - one is just an old metal dustbin, and the other, my kind neighbour donated. It is a HUGE plastic drum, which he cut the top off (saving for a lid). He attached a gutter and downpipe from my shed, and until I emptied, dredged and refilled my pond, it was full to the brim.

If i was less mathematically challenged, I'd be able to work out the volume of both butts, and therefore the amount of water I use from them - thus the amount I 'save' from using from the tap. However, they do need filling up with some rain - nd I get the point that in this drought, when everything is needing hydrating, the butts are already dry, and so this is when we use tap water.

I'd still rather use butts (and am considering another).

Same here - empty waterbutt! I collect the run-off from the hot tap which takes up to a gallon before the hot water comes through. I've got two 4pint plastic milk bottles that I collect it in. The ground is okay underneath the dry top crust, but the pots need watering every day now.

Yep, I'm working out how to go into summer mode here too, could urgently do with some rain to refill the water butts. Not too good as I've just planted or am about to plant / sow quite a bit.

woo, :D :D but I wouldn't like to smell your flowers.

Kandy, I agree that it can be awkward having a water butt. [IMG]

JarBax, the average large plastic water butt is about 50 gallons.

We have two of them and use them all the time when there is rain to fill them. Unfortunately the time we really need the water is in the drought and the one by the greenhouse only lasts two days in the growing season.

Oh, I do enjoy a good moan. [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

I scoop some water out of the fish pond when I need it, the nitrates in it does the garden good, when the pond is a bit low I top it up from from the hose your allowed to do that even in a drought this is also good for the fish problem solved and technically no rules broken
