i had this lovely picture of a carpet of ivy in part of my garden... knowing they were quite hardy plants, i thought i'd try it (i'm no expert)...

all went fine last year... now, after a relatively mild winter, with not too much snow, i find that the 'carpets' are just about 80% dead... all other ivies planted near walls are fine, it's just the ground lying ones that have suffered

unsure of the particular plant's name, but they are variegated, with fairly small leaves...

    all help appreciated !

Bit of a job to say without the name of the plant in question.
So the ground cover was not ivy, but some thing else.
It may well have been colder on the ground, as opposed to on the walls, that could explain the leaf loss.

I may be got this wrong, but I read the ground cover as Ivey?

Varigated with small leaves could be gold heart, I recently planted one called Joker with jagged leaves, small variagated but a real poor dooer.

As Pete says, depends on variety, I did at my first house have a picture of Iveys forming a kind of tapestry of ground cover and chose three different varieties to form an interlocking picture. It looke OK - well slightly dissapointing, however I passed the house some years later and it looked fantastic, so you may be need a bit of time and a couple more varieties - but take care one does not strangle the other.
