50 Litre bags of 'Jamie Oliver' potato compost have been discontinued by Homebase and were selling at 1.00 each. As that's the cheapest stuff around by far (and I'm going to use it for more than just potato bags) I got quite a few (my pile is now bigger than the one back at Homebase):

Homebase were also selling off 50 litre bags of their own brand peat free compost @ £1 each, and as they are on buy 3 get 1 free, it's 4 for £3 getting them down to 75p each. But the 'compost' is just like a load of shredded twig.

Another good deal I spotted today was at B&Q where their own brand 25 litre bags of John Innes #1 are reduced from £4.99 to £2.50. From what I saw coming out of a damaged bag it seems like OK stuff (got that bag for £1).

N.B. You need to make sure you get bags with orange reduced stickers on them as in the pic above or you'll end up paying full price.

Dobbies (Fenny Stratford) had loads of last season's compost reduced, and I got some 55 litre organic strawberry grow bags for £2 each (under half price) that I'll be using the compost from to put in pits for growing big tomatoes.

Lots of bargains to be had at the moment.

I rushed round to HomeBase first thing Monday morning, Hoping to at last fill my raised bed
Some Scrungee git had taken the lot at 09:00 all 50 bags
I expect they are EBAY at this minute for £2,50
Anyway I got two Large Zinc planters reduced from £40 to a fiver
Going to stick my container spuds in them

Use the Homebase storechecker (ignore the £2.99 price shown - it's the orange reduced stickers that count and their system can't detect them - it still shows that price for the dozen or so I didn't clear out from my local Homebase). Click on the "check stock or reserve" button in the link below:

        https://www.homebase.co.uk/webapp/w...ay?langId=110&storeId=10151&partNumber=105939

It shows Drakes Way sold out but 36 at Swindon Bridgemead (2.48 miles) and 92 at Swindon Orbital
(4.96 miles). If they're not reduced at one, try another and it the store hasn't implented the reduction yet, wait a while longer.

I'm assuming it's unsuitable for seeds/seedlings (excessive nutrients), but has got sufficient I nutrients/humus to use for the like of tomatoes, squashes, etc., and I'll be mixing it with other stuff.

I've bought another 4 bags, and only stopped due to having bought every single one with a reduced sticker on, the remainder being at the back of the pile and inaccessible to stickering.

I looked on Homebase stockchecker (see post above) when you mentioned on another (recycling stuff) thread that you were after some of this and saw that 2 out of 3 Homebases in Fife had it in stock - Glenrothes had none, Dundee had loads - but they are suddenly right out of stock, but Perth still had/have 85, so I was sure you'd get some from one of them.

It wasn't the Dundee store you went to by any chance? It's always worthwhile using a storechecker before heading off anywhere, although that's no indication that somebody's not beaten you to it. Happy hunting!

I've been to a couple of stores near me every day since Scrungee posted this and they haven't reduced them yet. From past experince I'm sure it's only a matter of time that every store will put this compost on sale.

This bargain hunting is starting to cost me. First day I got a Venus Fly Trap plant (very healthy looking) reduced to 50p. Next day I noticed the 50% off furniture in Homebase and bought a new set of Dining chairs. Today as I checked the compost stocks I kept my wallet firmly in my pocket and walked out the store without looking at anything else :)

If I can get my hands on any at that price, I'll use it as a soil conditioner, mix it 50:50 with my existing soil in planting holes and trenches for my veggies.

Spuce, times are tough even for us in the Stockbroker belt, if I can't get this cheap compost then one of my gardening staff will have to go :dbgrtmb:

I'm now going to start checking out surrounding Homebases for this (only if combined with trips for other stuff) and if I find lots more then part of my lawn at home will have to go.
