Jacaranda mimosifolia

As most know, I have two Jacarandas, both of which were drastically pollarded last September. They grew very quickly and we were told we probably would not have blooms this year. The one (in which Van has his tree pad, see Avatar) has not bloomed but the other has had a few ... including this mammoth one ...





Wiki says the panicles are 30cm/12in long and the leaves/fronds 45cm/18in long but I think the above panicle breaks these rules a bit.

 

Probably due to the cut back, all the strength has gone to the one flowering bud that was left.

 

This is the other Jacaranda by the path which was cut back again in the Autumn but has not grown back much ... but enough to hide Van in his treehouse ...

 

This year the one but the lane has lots of booms but it is vet leggy. I wonder if fronds will grow lower down


There are no blooms on the other one.

 

Obviously I only have pot growing experience, and found that cutting back hard each autumn to get the plants under cover meant no flowers just vigorous leafy growth the following year.
Pretty much how most spring flowering trees behave, I believe that the flowering one is much later than normal??.
You could try another cut back of the long shoots just leaving 2 pair of buds at the base, after flowering, or even now, hopefully it will then give the resulting new shoots time mature flower buds for next year, without too much vigour.

 

They were both cut back the same time. We might get our tree man back in September. You can see where it was cut back September before last at about 4-5 meters. Must admit the other was cut back again last September/October as it is shorter and reachable (Van's tree) so g=imagine that is why it is not blooming. They always bloom in June here.

 

Oh, ok, I thought it was earlier.

Thing is, my thoughts are that if you cut back in September, no flowers but obviously im only going by what I found.

 

Ok,just reading up and I'm totally wrong, they flower on new growth and pruning in late winter is best.

 

Clusters filling out ... but blooms are falling as quickly as they are opening ...


It is too tall to get a good closeup, this was my phone zoomed in then cropped so not really clear, but pretty ...

 

I've never known this before, the Jacaranda mimosifolio having a bloom in August ... May/June/July but not August ...

 

I have seen the odd flower in August in Madeira and Tenerife when they are in full leaf.
My Wisteria finished flowering in May but has just put out three flowers this week!
I am not sure there is a botanical reason for this but odd nonetheless.

 

I believe Victoria has had the Jacaranda pruned hard in the last year, that kind of puts things out of sinc quite often.
I believe Wisteria does often flower a second time, in good summers most years I see the odd flower on trained plants on walls flowering again in mid summer, like wise the early Magnolias that often flower again but are not that evident due to all the summer foliage.

 

It was cut back really hard in September 2020 and last year we only had a couple of unusually giant blooms, photos above, and beautiful in June this year, photo above. Photo of cutback two years ago ...

It grew back too leggy so are going to see about having it cut back lower, perhaps the level of the Oleander to the left.

 

The main road in Alcudia has hundreds of Jacarandas, quite a few were in flower like this one.

 

Here we are 2023 so time to get the Jacarandas pollarded.

We left the one on the lane this year doing well up the lamp post ..


But the one in the garden by the path to the house was cut back ...
