    Hi Capt'n

You run the risk of introducing blight into your garden with shopbought spuds, and you really don't want that.

Seed potatoes are so cheap its not really worth the risk, my first earlies only cost me about 60p and they are certified disease free.

ok thanks folks I will nip off to the garden centre tomorrow. They are too be grown in bags so i guess disease wouldn't be an issue but I want to give my self the best chance.
My local centre I see has a bit of a choice :)

    FIRST EARLIES
arran pilot home guard pentland javelin ulster prince ulster sceptre sharpes express duke of york red duke of york rocket
maris bard. foremost. vanessa. premiere. swift. inter. kidney. lady chrysal. casablanca.

SECOND EARLIES maris peer. wilja. estima. nadine. marfona. kestrel. charlotte

    MAIN CROP
pentland crown. maris piper. desiree. king edward. romano. cara. pink fir apple. sante. valor. maxine.

I assume they are named in order of harvesting so if I want an early crop I go for first earlies .

Well I went for Red Duke Of York, Sharp Express and Kestrel only cost 3.55 for 12 of each which should be ample I imagine. I think I will stagger the planting as I don't want a glut of spuds. Call me optimistic :)

as a quick guide when would I expect to pick my spuds ( Red Duke Of York, Sharp Express and Kestrel )

They are flying up and the ones in the bin have reached the top all ready. I seem too have buried the ticket so no idea which variety they are :)

Is it a case of just having a root around or do I wait for the flowers
