Check out the Latest Headlines. Not looking good at all.

Yet another natural disaster to add to the list this year.

Also, other countries are in the path of the tsunami thats on its way across the pacific.

The images of the water flowing inland is quite scary to say the least. It's unbelievable that it can travel that far inland, with all that destruction.

I have a mate living on the coast of Taiwan. I've not heard Taiwan mentioned on the news but it is only 500 miles from Japan, so naturally I'm a bit worried about him.

Those poor people of Japan have my sympathy.

I know all the coastlines in the pacific have got tsunami alerts, but, I should think that they have more time to prepare, and evacuate if they live close to the coastline, so, fingers crossed other countries will be more prepared.

Should try not to worry, as they will be aware of whats approaching.

I have been in touch with my son in Bangkok. No problems there at this time
A fried in Tokio is OK but had a real good shaking from the quake.
Hurrendous images on Sky News...30 foot of water doing 60mph has an awful lot of energy.
I feel for Hawia in an hour or so.

Just spent an anxious few hours trying to contact brother in law and his wife who live in Yokohama.
His office is on the shore in Yokohama bay and their apartment on 26th floor overlooking the bay.
Got news (third hand) an hour ago that they are safe.

Looks as though all the tsunami warnings in other countries arent as bad as people feared, however Japan looks to have taken a complete battering.

If anyone on here is worried about friends and family (as mentioned above), there is a website launched by google which may help find out if they are ok.

Not perhaps the expected response, or even one that is going to be liked, but I really do feel that with political World events, and natural disasters, these are exciting times to be living in. I believe that the next three years or so are going to see massive changes throughout the world, and whether it is natures way of dishing out a bit of revenge for our own destruction of it, or whether we are just a blip in a much bigger picture I don't know, but I really do feel that this planet is truly awesome.

Oddly, my thoughts over what is happening generally throughout the World are purely positive and not negative, and as hard as it is to take, feel that we are long over due for some serious changes.

Eddie, While I understand where your coming from regarding these type of events, I cannot agree with it being a positive thing, as my thoughts are purely with those you have lost loved ones, and those who have lost their entire home and possessions.

I always try to put myself in their situation, and as a Father of 3, certainly cannot find any positives... and I would bet my last penny you would agree with me should you find yourself in the same position.

I do agree though, that these images we are seeing are staggering to watch, almost frightening.

    Regards

Where are the positives in ordinary people dying, or their livlihoods being destroyed so they can no longer afford to feed their kids, or people worried sick about friends and relatives in the region who they're still waiting to hear from?

I'm sorry, but there is nothing positive in carnage.

It's hard, Eddie, for people to see the "bigger picture" when as Clueless put it so succinctly "ordinary people are dying, or their livelihoods being destroyed, so they can no longer afford to feed their kids". Like Luke I understand the "angle of your dangle", but I think if you were there right now having to pull broken bricks and concrete away to get the body of a child out, the bigger picture would look irrelevant in the midst of the reality of agony. pain, grief, death and destruction, and the grander philosophical thoughts about Mother Nature, the future of mankind has to take a back seat to reality.

I agree the Planet is "awesome" and as we are all gardeners we've got a great respect for Mother Nature and we're all aware how powerful she is and how fragile and vulnerable we are in the face of it. There are things of great moment in political and geological history right now, as you say, but they've also happened throughout the history of the world, but since you weren't there then, it has less impact than happening today when we can see it happening within seconds from the other side of the world thanks to this technical age. But even with all this information I am still able to grasp the pain of the real disaster that's happened out there without thinking it's part of a grander plan that Mother Nature is enacting.

I heard from my mate in Taiwan today. Although the news said that Taiwan hadn't been affected, I was still worried because my mate's work takes him all over the region.

He said the news that Taiwan was unaffected was wrong. They felt the earthquake but apparently there were only minor problems there. I was so relieved to learn that he is ok.

However for the poor people in Japan, things just go from bad to worse. Apart from the current official death toll being over 1000, there are still many people unaccounted for, and many thousands living in temporary accomodation. To top it all off, one of their nuclear power stations has blown up and is leaking radiation, and I think its three more are in trouble.

Those poor people, they are really going through hell at the moment.
