    Hi Everyone,

Bit of a quandary here - I have a largish (4m tall) Japanese Cherry. It's just coming into bloom now and looks fab :dbgrtmb:.

It has 3 large trunks and 2 small trunks - some of which will shortly grow into each other - the crown of the tree does however look well proportioned.

Should I take off the trunks and leave the main one in place - will this cause any problems? Or is it best to leave well alone - maybe nature will take its course and the tree will be fine?

    Thanks,
    Chris

Would be helpful if you could post some pictures.
I pruned my weeping cherry severely last year after flowering as the branches were trailing along the ground, It has flowered magnificently this year.

        Hi Pamsdish,

Here are some pic's - plus one extra of the blooms about to smother the whole tree.

        Any advice appreciated IMG_20130101_000127.jpg IMG_20130101_000142.jpg IMG_20130101_000156.jpg .

I'm in the garden at the moment - the marvels of modern technology. I love this time of year.:)

        Thanks very much,
        Chris

so you bought it as a multiple stemmed tree ? or are some the rootstock ?

I would be wary of taking them out so close to the ground as that is what you would need to do but Cherry takes ages to heal and its meant to be done mid summer so they have the least chance of getting diseased and time to heal before winter arrives.

Do we have a tree surgeon on here ? surely we must.
have you taken one out allready as the 1st photo has 5 stems and the 2nd photo 4

I think you need to ask a professional on this one.

I think the 5th one is hidden @Spruce It looks like you need to remove any touching or crossing others, but I agree about timing, where are the tree surgeons please.

            Hi Everyone,

Thanks for replying to my post.

The tree was here when I purchased the bungalow - so I don't know it's history. I'm hoping that nature has a way of dealing with such situations as I don't want to remove any of the crown - it really does look glorious when it's in flower.

I've tried 'googling' but can't get a definite answer.

Lovely sunny day here - but too windy - so I'm having to sit in the sun lounge looking out - life can be tough sometimes!

            Thanks,
            Chris

Thanks for replying whis4ey :blue thumb: - you may well be on the right track. I've since seen some pictures on the internet where is looks like the separate trunks have melded into one. So is does seem that nature will provide the solution. I'm quite pleased that I don't have to start removing any of the trunks as it would spoil the crown :).

This is natural, normal growing form of cherry trees and I agree with whis4ey in leaving it well alone if possible. Cherries generally don't respond too well to pruning, especially loosing limbs so close to the ground.

And.... 7 years later - this is what it looks like now. Letting nature take its course was the right decision.
