Hello josephine! Acers are tolerant of most soils and situations so any reasonable garden soil should suffice, including neutral.

They do like sun but in saying that, not "my" sun ... my two Bonsais have suffered terribly this summer and I may not be able to recover them! :(

I've got one in neutral soil, it seems happy enough!

My mum tried to grown one in her chalky soil and it didn't like that though.

They don't like too much direct sunlight or winds. They also don't like soils that wet and dry quickly, or late spring frosts. Sounds impossible but average neutral clay loam, or light woodland edge conditions will do fine. Good luck!!

Japanese maples seem to prefer a slightly acid soil but will do fine in a neutral soil
They need good drainage and a constant moisture content ... not going too wet or too dry as mentioned
Have you ever tried growing them from seed? You can produce some brilliant plants free of charge [IMG]
