I decided on the spot to take this plot, it's already half full of fruit canes which just need a small bit of maintenance and the other half has been turned into raised beds, these don't look too weedy. One is full of strawberries the rest look bare. I reckon I don't have too much to do to get it productive.

It has a lot going for it, reasonably flat (difficult to find in Guildford) , mains water on the adjacent plot, communal lawnmowers and strimmers and not too shaded by trees. Just need a shed and a couple of chairs and I'm set.

              Hiya John :)
Looks pretty good :dbgrtmb: Should be able to get production going fairly quickly, I reckon. FWIW, I'd be looking to get those raised beds filled with something, maybe pinch some soil from elsewhere along with some manure, possibly.
              Happy Gardening :)

Nice one John, just watch out if there are raspberries.
The site I'm on has them on other plots, but as far as I can make out they are virus ridden, small crops and poor growth.
My canes went the same way.
I think similar happens with strawberries.

I see you also have similar to the plots near me, raised beds, at ground level.:snork:

Never could work out what that was all about.

What about a polytunnel, even just a small one as somewhere to shelter from rain and leave plants to harden off/await planting out?

They are along the Farnham Road nearer town, access via Wodeland Ave (just outside the village but an easy 10 minutes walk down there and about half an hour walk back up the hill :))

Yes got the spuds this morning thanks!

Must have taken a fair bit of effort to build too. I suspect they were a bit higher when the soil was initially fluffed up, at least they have stopped the grass from encroaching.

Thanks for the info, I'm not experienced with soft fruit so this will be a learning curve for me.

Good idea Freddy, I had the same thoughts, I'll rob the adjacent paths of their topsoil and I'm hopeful there will be a communal buy of a load of manure I can use.
