Done Marley, good find, i'll copy that to the fishing forums later.

There is another fishy problem looming, Iceland, Norway & the Faroes have decided they are going to take hundreds of tonnes of mackerel each, they previously didn't fish for them, in fact Icelandic housewives consider them to be "dirty fish"

At present catch rates the mackerel are sustainable, if this happens stocks will collapse.

I've signed it Marley and Thanks for bringing it to our attention:thmb:

It is shocking at this awful waste and I would have thought the fish that were not wanted could have been processed to make cat food surely:cnfs::scratch:

I've signed the petition Marley Farley. Thank you for the link.

I did know this was happening - but it's difficult to find a voice.

Kandy, I know what you are saying about using the waste for cat food. But cat food has been part of the problem - not the solution. Thousands of tons of fish were just taken with the aim of selling it for cat food.

    Signed (twice!).

Part of the problem is also that seafood is seen as a healthy option - doctors keep telling us to eat fish at least twice a week. But throwing dead fish back overboard, just because of quotas? Incredible - only bureaucrats could see reason in this.

Hi Alice,I never realised that fish were taken from the seas for the pet food trade.I always thought that the fish in cat food was just the waste parts not used in the production of fish products for us humans. We live and learn....:)

Throwing dead fish back overboard because of quotas.
Only beaurocrats would see the sense .

I'm not defending this in any way but a possible reason and explanation.

How do you stop people from overfishing.
Only by not letting them profit from it.
So, whether you have caught too much fish by accident or design (the policy is aimed at design) the fish is going back - dead or alive. That deals with the people who are just ignoring the quotas - even if it produces a mad result for fish caught by accident.

Sometimes you have to go for a mad result in some areas to get the overall result.

    Example:
I used to do voluntary work in a youth club.
The boys commandeered all the facilities - snooker tables, 5 aside pitch, that kind of thing - and the girls sat huddled at a few tables in the corner.
When the girls tried to use those facilities the boys harrassed them off with derisory comments about how useless they were, the size of their bits and that kind of thing.
I allocated girls time for those facilities and told the boys it didn't matter whether the girls used them or not, so there was no point in harassing them off. They still tried to get the girls off, it was only when they realized that they wouldn't profit from it that they accepted the rule.

Long winded, but that's what throw the fish back is about.

Marley, my fire wall (Zone alarm) flagged the fishfight site as 'suspicious', I googled it and it seem that Hugh Fearnley-whittingstall (sp?) is behind it and there were no reports of it being a dodgy site so I guess it must be OK. Sorry to question it but you can't be too careful when giving out your email.

    So I signed it :gnthb:

    Always wise to check John.

I'd like to quote Barrys' response to the petition from Anglers Net forums, as you may have guessed, its not that simple to address.

"Think it's a bit deeper than fish dumping, the E U masters have had control for thirty years or so, You would have thought they would have had something else sorted by now. Gonna be a few more years before the cfp is sorted, then a few more years to see if it can work or not, in our lifetime perhaps? So for thirty years or so, they have been part of the problem.

Anyway, does fishfight have or propose an alternative?
What about the liaison with the MCS, they are advocating 30% of our seas to be closed, ntz's, that means angling is under threat as we know it, yet the MCS are involved with this as well, so tread carefully before jumping springs to mind. How about greenpeace, i don't know what their agenda is with the anglers, so again i would like to reserch that one, unless someone has a few pointers. "

I suppose there are parallels between the EU food mountains and this...

I'm a bit on the fence on this one, I agree that throwing back dead fish is ridiculous, but how do you preserve fish stocks.
I seem to remember that certain fish used to be "in season" at certain times of the year, but now as with most things you can have it all year.
Fine with the few farmed species, but I think fish must be one of the last really "wild" caught foods.

I know the quota approach is daft, but what actually are the other options?

I'm not sure if it still goes on but there used to be a problem with say, Spanish fishing boats landing their catch from UK waters, in the UK.
It went against UK quotas which inturn put UK fishing boat out of business.

If we were not part of the EU we might have a chance to preserve our fish stocks in much the same way as the more Northern countries mentioned by ziggy, (Iceland Norway etc.), who are now going after mackerel, I think it was those countries that used to fish large amounts of sprats just for fertilizer, not sure if they still do.

But then those countries would also like a free for all on whaling :(
