Has anyone else noticed a distinct decline in junk mail since the recession hit? We get our paper recycling box emptied every other week and mine was always full but now it's barely half full. Interesting .... :snz:

Not too much yet Daisees, still get lots & lots of take-away menus and chinese and indian ones, which I love but we can only afford about once every 6 months!

    cheers

Fortunately where we live there are no takeaways that deliver - so we tend to get very little junk mail - mostly from insurance and window companies :)

If you haven't already done so then to *significantly* reduce the amout of junk mail register for free on Mail Preference Service

"Registration with MPS reduces personally addressed unsolicited sales and marketing direct mailings by about 95%"

    It worked for me.

I seem to get more online spam and junk than the paper versions. Especially the ones from banks asking me to urgently put in my account number, sort code and pin number as there is a problem with my account. Mostly from banks I have never had anything to do with. Ever!

We still get a load of Junk mail, plus a load in our local papers, then on E-mail for the simple reason many people Fail to use the bcc section when sending E-mails to more than one person, or even 'clean-up' an E-mail before forwarding and this Does annoy me.

Should have been more specific - wasn't actually referring to takeaway menus and leaflets in magazines and newspapers, rather the endless mailshots from insurance, loan and catalogue companies. I used to get at least half a dozen every day. Now it's more like per week.

I haven't received a "pre-approved credit card application" for months now, whereas they used to land on the doormat every other day.

As JWK says register with MPS and also TPS to seriously reduce the junk mail and cold telephone calls.

You can go one further and ask royal Mail to opt out of the "Door to Door" delivery of unaddressed junk mail they deliver. They do warn you that you may miss out on something important but the government has the right to override the opt out with such things as the Swine Flu leaflet so I think that is just a scare tactic to stop you opting out.

Yep far less. ^ My postie is a really nice fella, young married with a small child hats off to him as he is the best postie we have had. I haven't opted out of the door to door, he gets good money for those and it goes direct to him.

So BM, are you saying the posties get paid extra money for delivering these? I didn't know that. I presume it isn't Royal Mail paying them. What about the time factor in delivering these?

    cheers

I believe it's the case with leaflets or stuff marked 'The Occupier' and good for him. My postie is first class too.

I used to get no-end of loan and credit card application forms, charity stuff, book clubs, blank cheques from credit card companies to transfer my (non-existant) debt from other ccards. As I say, my box used to be almost full every time. Since I started this thread I've had about 3 junk mailings.

The lack of junk mail has been put down to the credit crunch. It's said that these marketing companies don't want to waste time and money sending applications, etc, when people are less likely to take an offer up. So, at least something good came out of the crunch.
