A lovely assortment of pictures there Woo. I think the black bird is a crow.

I'll try and describe it Woo. A Carrion crow has a straight beak that blends into his face with feathers around it. A rook has a slightly hooked beak that looks like it's been stuck on with grey putty.

 

As always, great pictures Woo, and anything with a Castle in it, is fine by me

Bloke I used to work with on the farm used to say,

 

Spot on there Sheal.

Another easy way of telling the difference between the two: If you see one bird on its own, then it's a crow, as they are mostly solitary. If you see a group of the birds, they'll be rooks, which are far more gregarious and rarely found alone.

There's an old East Anglian saying which sums it up perfectly; "If thaas a rook, thaas a crow and if they're crows, they're rooks."

No Val, a Raven isn't a Crow but it's of the Crow family.

Woo, that isn't a very good image of a Rook, I can't find a decent one on the web either. They visit my garden from time to time so I'll keep my camera handy and see if I can get some shots for you.
