    Will I ever garden again?
I certainly hope so but not for a few weeks.
It is a big opp.but seemed to have gone well ,brilliant nurses got me out of bed next day putting weight on it would you believe ,that was a week ago and now I hobble around on one or two crutches.
So that’s why I have been quiet on GC.

:) Welcome to the Club, Rod. xx It is coming up to three years for mine 17 December and it has never given me problems having had a non-cemented anterior version. I too was up the next day having light physio but had to do non-weight bearing for six weeks then back to driving and normal activities and 16 physio sessions. With a cemented hip you are active more quickly.

Last month had a slip on sloping calçada (cobblestones) and am suffering from torn meniscus muscles in knee so hobbling about but mostly in wheelchair or bed. :hate-shocked: Had X-rays now waiting for Cat scan.

Look after yourself and I am sure you will find your gardening mpjo in due course. xx :imphrt:

From what I've been told - the key is to get moving as soon as possible :dbgrtmb:.

My friends Dad had a hip replacement and refused initially to walk - he spent the rest of his life limping around.

The Forum will know that I broke my hip in a 'skydiving' accident  a number of years back now - and was told by the Dr. that I would in later life suffer arthritis in that broken hip. It does play up in damp/cold weather.

I'll probably be going for the same op in time :frown:.

Anyway - glad to hear that all has gone well - I suspect you'll be out in the garden sooner than you think :blue thumb:.

Best wishes for a quick recovery.

Some of my friends have had new hips and they cautioned about bending too much initially as it could cause dislocation. They are all strutting about without any limping or pain.

One of my clients is the wife of a hip replacement replacement surgeon/specialist. I didn't even know they existed. He is fully booked out as far as a year most times.

keep going to physical therapy. and move it. take some pain meds 30 min. prior to working with the therapist. they do wonders with hips these days.

Had both mine down years ago (they didn't tell me when I was little it's not a good idea to play serious tennis!......watch this space re Andy Murray)Had 1 hip replacement 12 years ago and the other about 9 years ago.
It is really up to you now. Go swimming once the wound is healed, the BEST way of exercising without weight. I went when still on 2 sticks, hated every minute of it but it is brilliant for stretching the muscles. If you have 1 use an exercise bike again using the muscles without weight.
Yes you have to be careful not to bend too far but apart from that the sooner you get mobile the better. With both mine I went for my 6 week x rays with no sticks and no limp, this is good going and was indeed applauded by the surgeon. That took serious effort but after all you are not ill. Make sure you get plenty of rest but that does not mean sitting for hours doing nothing:).
I have an enormous garden of nearly 2 acres which I deal with myself and look after a horse which needs it's field cleaned of poop daily plus I push mountains of resulting manure about and touch wood have never had 1 minutes bother with my new hips.....rest of me is a disaster:)
I count myself and anybody else who has had replacement joint surgery extremely fortunate. I would have been wheelchair bound by now if it wasn't for modern medicine.
Hope all goes well for you, even if mine hadn't worked so well it was just complete bliss to be pain free for the 1st time in years as I had had problems for at least 8 years before i was given my 1st replacement.

All the best to you, @roders . I feel your pain, literally. I had total knee replacement six weeks ago. Now I have two bionic knees. So far I have managed some light weeding and cutting herbaceous plants back.

Hi Roders, sorry to hear about your problems with your hip and the need for an replacement operation, just take it slow and easy to get back health again.

My life long friend had his hip replaced some months ago and the first few weeks were not easy in being able to move around the house. But within a few weeks he was taking daily walks along the Canal with his wife and also going to a Healthcare Gym for exercises. He now gardens, has dug and widened a border with the last month but has to go back into Hospital to have the other hip replaced.
I wish you well, my friend:love30::thumbsup: Keep us all informed of your progress and how you're getting on as we all care about our friends.:snorky:
