[IMG] Good point Mike,it does have a slight onionish smell,so can we assume its some kind of Allium?I would like to pin it down.

Yup - confirming that they are Allium sphaerocephalon. It took me ages a few years back to find them, after adoring them in a tub outside my cousin's flat. She had bought the bulbs in Homebase, but it took me years to track more down! Actually, just thinking I haven't seen mine this year - probably under the rest of the garden somewhere!

Some more pics - aren't they fabulous!

I agree with Marley Farley and Jarbox. I believe that Allium sphaerocephalon is the last of the Alliums to flower.

I have had a number around the garden for two years. Does anyone know if they increase naturally? Mine are certainly holding their own, but I can't swear that they are increasing.

We can't grow any alliums, wife being allergic to any of the onion family even the smell makes her feel ill.
