    This is growing where a struggling perennial Lobelia was. I had assumed for a while that was what it was, but is clear now that I was wrong.

    I've probably been nurturing a weed!

    Thanks in anticipation!

      Don't worry a weed is just a plant in the wrong place :doh:

        Blimey, pot sprang to mind at first, but it isn't.

        One of the Willow Herbs?

        The leaves look like leucanthemum, but there the similarity ends.

          Aw, Zigs, I didn't think you were that innocent!

          I still think it might be a lobelia. I had one once and it was green and weedlike too.

          Try smoking it and see what happens.

            I think it'll be one o' them syphilitic lobelias.

              Thanks all! It's really bugging me!

              You must have psychic abilities! That is what was growing there, but this is different;
              a] the stem is not square,
              b] this is where the flowers should emerge, not a shorter stem..................

              Maybe I should add this - I do toss failed seed pots down, although not that I can remember in this spot.

                Hope it's not a mutant triffid type Willowherb that blooms, sets seed and covers 3 square miles on a breezy day, :lunapic 130165696578242 5:

                  I have an answer, and it was obvious in the end. Solidago, AKA Goldenrod. Obvious because the previous owners allowed a whole clump of it to grow on the other side of the garden. As they chucked everything in the compost I put it there when I used their compost to top the soil up.
