I know this isn't strictly gardening but I'm hoping some of you have a few ideas on keeping bananas in the kitchen. I eat quite a few but can only get to the shops 2-3 times a week. Consequently, I'm always binning at least two or three bananas that have gone too ripe to eat before I get around to them! I've tried putting them in the cold spot, hanging them on a hook and even keeping them in the fridge (worst of all!). I hate so much waste. Anybody do any better than me?!!

Kitchens are often too hot to keep bananas in, try buying them a bit on the green side and so they will ripen as you eat them, or try buying one of those shrink wrapping devices that suck all the air out and so slows down the ageing process, QVC the shopping channel sell then, they are not cheap but if your wasting food it's a good investment in the long run. You can put lots of other things in the shrink wrap too so it's a good idea, we have one and they are wonderful, wouldn't be without it now, will post a link if I can find one.

[IMG] I have been usuing a vacu sealer for years & wouldn't be without it. I think it is a wonderful gadget.
Sorry Fran, don't have any ideas about the bananas. Except. Does it make any difference if they are in a cool dark place or a cool light place & preferably not the kitchen where the temperature varies..? ;)

I do not know anything about bananas, but basic chemistry suggests that the main culprit is temperature. Rotting is essentially a complex chemical reaction, and my school chemistry days told me the basic rule of thumb was that for every rise of 10C the chemical rate of an organic reaction doubles. It is doubtless more complex than this, but you cannot get away from the chemistry.

So keeping them in the fridge must be the simplest effective way. I keep all veg and fruit in the fridge along with bread. But you will also need to keep them in a sealed container or polythene bag as the humidity in a fridge is so low it will dry them out.

On a similar vein I have read that seeds in a dry sealed container could last for a few years at room temperature, tens of years in a fridge, and hundreds of years in a deep freeze.

I keep my autumn apples in a cool timber shed will ventilated wether or not it would work for bananas i don't know. And it would be a bit of a trek to fetch one.

Wipe skin & slice banana lengthways.
    Lay on a grill tray.
Sprinkle with brown sugar & cinnamom.
    Leave for about 20-30 mins.
Grill under a medium grill until sugar is bubbling.
    Serve with Natural yog.......Yummyyyyy...
    (Obviously don't eat the skins....!!! :( :( :D :D
