I feel that the fruits on my pear tree are coming to the end of their natural life on the tree - is it possible to pick and keep them like you can apples...wrapped in newspaper? I'd be grateful for advice please. I think it's a Conference variety.

Yes they'll keep JJ,need to be kept in the cool and dark. They're best stored when they're not quite ripe.I wouldn't wrap Pears though but keep them stored not touching each other:blue thumb:

Monty Don was storing pears this week in the dark in racks not touching, think he said wouldn`t keep like apples though.

Thank you. I shall give some a try on improvised racking in the garage.....there's a limit to how much pear and blackberry crumble can be appreciated!

What sort are they, Conference or Comice? I've only stored (not quite ripe) Conference pears and used shallow cardboard fruit boxes with the polystyrene inlays with pear shaped depressions that supermarkets/market traders get their pears in.

If you have a bumper crop and far too many for storage and have a fruit press, put them in your freezer for a few days then defrost and press them whole (this is the only way to get clear pressed juice from pears as milling/pressing eating pears produces a load of goo) and then pasteurise the juice.
