KEEPING SEEDLINGS WARM AT NIGHT.

Keeping our seedlings frost free at night............Just.

The metal hoops keep the fleece off the plants and the warmth created during the day is harboured within............

 

Nice job Roders Always wondered how plant fleece actually kept the plants warm . So the compost in the seed trays warms up during the day . When you cover the trays with fleece it acts like little storage heaters. What min temps are you getting down your way ?

In my greenhouse I use several sheets of newspaper over the top of seedlings. You just have to remember to take them off the next morning.

 

I have a Parasene paraffin heater to keep thing warm on chilly nights . I usually put it on when the night temp hits 5°c or lower . Having a few days away this weekend in North wales , I'll cover my plants as you can't trust a heater for 3 days.

 

Cosmos,Cinereria,Rudbeckia,Geranium,Verbena,Fuscia,Tomato,Corgettes,Laurentia.
Mostly for borders and baskets.

 

Many times the temp is just below freezing(I think a wooden greenhouse is marginally warmer than metal)
I used to have an oil heater but it didn't seem to raise the temp hardly at all.
So I use this method and it seems to work......although low temps. are not conducive to good growing hence the fleece is sometimes is left covering all day.

 

Zone envy again. We are still experiencing temperatures well below freezing so I have a natural gas heater in my greenhouse. And an alarm for when the temperatures drop too much.

I have a kerosene/parrafin heater for the smaller greenhouse but it pumps out too much heat (no thermostat on it) in even low and pops the automatic vent. So this year I will wait until the nights hovering just above freezing and use two kerosene lanterns to heat the area just a smidge.
