Heavens, I have no idea. There is no "use this type of growing medium", your group start on Boxing day, so what's the deal with their recommendation given the big difference in zone, etc ....

Best get a vaporiser then sow half of them now and save half for boxing day

They'll need light over winter to stop them getting leggy :)

MPC will be fine, firmed down with plenty of room for root growth, thats the main thing they'll be doing over winter :)

Lets hope we can grow some show stoppers this year :)

Growing instructions here, but very much aimed at the UK:

Just had a quick look on google at your average temps, looks like you get colder winters than here but hotter summers. Seems a bit early to be sowing now as Zigs says as you'd need to nurture them through the long winter. You could try a quarter now, half on boxing day then the last sowing in mid Feb, to hedge your bets.

Not sure how many seeds you have got in the packet, only sow a few at a time. I sowed about 20 seeds last year in total and most of them germinated. That is a lot of onions as they get so big and I needed around 8 sq yards of beds in their final growing position.

Onions are pretty hardy so will tolerate frosts, but with these show stoppers you really want to keep them growing without any checks (low temps) constantly until you get them planted outside - maybe in April/May after the last frost.

I'm guessing at dates because it depends on your local conditions, if you are on the shore of Lake Ontario and have a sheltered garden you could do really well :)

When do you generally get your first frost? (Over here it's on average late Oct/Nov)

When do you get your last frost? (Over here it's April)

Good luck and keep us posted :)

Trimming onion leaves (and roots) appears to be a North American practice:

            http://www.groworganic.com/non-gmo-...able-seeds/onion-seeds/onion-transplants.html

            http://www.theprofessionalgardener.com/2011/05/transplanting-onion-starts/

UK giant onion growers go to great lengths to get and to preserve as many leaves as possible (and don't trim roots, in fact will transplant into to deep pots) and it's UK onion growers who grow the World Record Onions.

Thank you Zigs, John and Scrungee. I will follow your advice and do successive sowing. I've got piles of deep pots and I have an indoor growing area in my cellar with lights and a timer.

I most likely won't grow big ones like you but I shall have fun growing them to whatever size they give me and then of course eating them!

              many thanks
              Lori

Is that a cool cellar, or a warm one with a boiler in?

The corner of the cellar where they will be is fairly cool and I plan to use the cooler fluorescents them rather than hps. At least I hope this will work until our days get a bit longer.
