I have just received some seeds that i bought from the internet just wondering whether i should first sow the seed in a pot before putting in the ground, says they grow between 6-10ft just wondering whether anyone has these in their garden.

Without knowing the plant, I would agree with Marley Farley about the pot. You have far more control over everything. Christopher Lloyd wrote that he used to sow annuals direct into the border, as is often recommended, but later in like he said that he came to the conclusion that everything should be sown in a pot first.
