My kitchen is now taking on the appearance of a Jungle due to the fact that I had to put the "overspill" from the room I'd converted to an "overwintering" room into it. So now, while my Kitchen is fairly large, 21' x 18', the intrusion of 3 Banana trees, three Palms, and 6 Canna's, all in pots has made it seem a lot smaller.:what::D Anyone else having the same sort of "trouble"???:D

Thats a very large kitchen Armandii.

Even so, is it not too warm for overwintering?

I always have problems finding enough space for overwintering but I do have a conservatory for the stuff that likes it warm and a couple of far too small greenhouses for the cool plants.

Wouldn`t the bananas and palms survive outside in a sheltered area with the pots wrapped in bubble and the tops protected by frost fleece? The cannas should do ok in a frost free shed or garage.:dbgrtmb:

The thing is, Pete, the Kitchen door is always open, well ajar, throughout the day for the two Moggies to go in and out, so the Kitchen is quite cool.:D In fact, I sometime wonder if it's not too cold in there, but I try to keep a check on the room Thermometer, and if it is too cool the Moggies have to stay indoors.:D

I did think about leaving the Bananas and Palms outside, Dai. But the last two Winters have seen such low temperatures that I did get some damage to them even though they were covered in Hessian and Bubble Wrap. Plus, I'd lost some much more hardier plants to the last 2 Winters, so I'd rather not take the chance. If I start seeing anything moving in the undergrowth I'll think again.:WINK1::heehee::D

The closest I've been to what you describe Armandii is when the weekend before last, I bought among other things, two blackberry bushes. By the time I got them home it was too late to mess about in the garden in the dark so they lived in the kitchen all last week until the weekend, when I planted them out. I have to say I quite liked the effect, and sort of wish I could have a permanent substantial plant or two in there. I don't think the wife would let me though.

All my bananas and cannas and other tender plants are still outside, we had a bit of frost last week which has stopped the ensetes and the t. rex has lost its leaves but the rest are still going strong. I'm wondering if it will be after xmas before I have to bring mine in.

You're a braver man that me, John:D:heehee: I brought mine indoors as I didn't want to get back from Manchester late one night to find a forecast of heavy frost or the like and being scurrying around in the dark, and a lot of the pots were in awkward spots and heavy!!!:WINK1::rolleyespink::D

Actually, Clueless, I'm starting to get used to the Jungle effect.......and starting to like it. Indoor Blackberries???............Works for me!!!!!!!!:loll::heehee:

Hi Armandii, I would probably have filled our Kitchen (which is of a similar size to yours) up more than I have but every time my lovely wife sees a plant coming in the house I get "the look" :D :D :heehee:..as it is I've got a handful of plants in there that are fine as our kitchen too is far from the warmest room in the house.

So our shed is crammed to the rafters with Cannas, Echiums, Fuschias, etc... I've hung fleece all round the inside of the shed and over some of the plants; all the pots are lifted off the ground and have bubble wrap wrapped around them, I check them regularly to remove dead leaves from the cannas etc and they're all looking good so far :thumb:

I also have my new 'blow away' full of plants that need just a little protection from the winter weather; mostly young plants that I want to get through their first winter and then they'll be fine...:thumb:

I was going to bring in all my chilli plants this week but they have all, suddenly, become residences for a plague of whitefly

"Anyone else having the same sort of "trouble"???"

I wouldn't be allowed - and we don't even live together!

Conservatory pretty much full though, as is the spare bedroom. The dormant tender bulbs and tubers are now up in the loft, and my Dads greenhouse "received" a few at the weekend.
I now have to make room in the garage for three Sollya's (the white one is still putting flowers out despite the frosts), my Erythrina, tender Abutilon and my Metrosideros.
