This past December, when I went to visit my family in SA, we went to the Kruger Park for 5 nights.

Had a really good time. And saw some amazing wildlife.

Have booked again to go this December

I'd be interested to know how the parks in S. Africa compare with say Kenya.

Its just something I thought about in the past and often wondered which is the more commercialised. And is one better than the other for watching the wildlife.

S.Africa, I think. appeals to me more due to its greater variation in climate and terrain, which I know means covering large distances, but just the same, more varied perhaps???

Wouldn't let the Tesco buyers in there though.

              Pete,
              Never been to Kenya.
But most of the game reserves in SA are self drive. Which is what I love. Going where I want and when I want, having to spot the wildlife for myself.

              Zigs,
Apparently Tesco are taking the bar codes off the burgers......

There is a big problem with Rhino poaching at the moment. The East has increased demand for the horn and the locals are killing hundreds of them a year.

              A few more photos

That is really bad about the Rhinos.
The far East will wipe out Africas wildlife if they get there way, ivory and rhino horn etc.

Its a shame, but until they get educated it will go on.
I've managed to survive without ivory, and as to rhino horn?
I'm not sure I need it.

                  Pete,

It really angers me. Agree with you totally.

There is a book called "Killing for profit, exposing the illegal rhino horn trade" byJulian Rademeyer. It's also available on kindle/ebook. Well worth reading if you are interested in wildlife and conservation.

Having only been to Kenya I can't comment on SA but I would imagine Kenya to be more commercialised. Although it may have more National Parks than SA they are smaller and probably more crowded. I think Kenya is possibly better for birds variety.

The worst thing I experienced was the vast number of Chinese going on safari seeing where their ornaments and 'health remedies' come from and as we saw a lot of Elephants it must give these misguided people the idea that there is a endless supply.

Any more birds Sirius? Your Giant Kingfisher is a little clearer than mine.
I saw about 150 different species last August, there were loads of White Backed Vultures but no others.
