I made my asparagus bed pigeon proof but I didn't reckon on the collared doves, the pests managed to get through my defences, wire netting covered with a fine mesh so with great regret they have become ferret food. They died of lead poisoning (.22 calibre lead).

They had also taken a shine to my peas too.

I only shoot as a last resort and whilst I'm not happy about it, collared doves are not a native species and much like grey squirrels are becoming quite a problem.
