Hi all, just a quick question, all my plants seem quite small compared to photos/information I have found on the net for veg growing at this time of year, will my plants catch up or will I just have late crops or have I blown it? the weather has been so cold that I have only really just planted things outside?

No, you are certainly not too late for the majority of vegetables; in fact subjects such as outdoor tomatoes, sweet corn and courgettes I would not plant outdoors until this month. You will of course have to purchase plants from your garden centre. The courgettes you could possible sow direct at this time.
    Time for a crop of carrots, lettuce,peas,broad beans,dwarf french beans,spring onions,garden swedes,beetroot - and much more.

Too late for leeks and parsnips which need a long growing season, although some would try the parsnips. It is often nicer to use baby root vege than let grow to maturity.

Hi and thanks for your reply, we have grown lots of things from seed already but was just worried that the plants seemed little still - ie: tomatoes around 12 inches high, broad beans 18 inches - peas same and broccoli and chards only about 6/7 inches?

We have planted some carrot, beetroot, and parsnip seeds a week ago.

I don't really mind if they are only baby veg, would be cute :D

Don't worry! I live in the South West and my stuff is a bit smaller than yours! I did plant (inside) a bit late this year, but I reckon that most things will catch up once they get settled and I won't be far behind.

Boo hoo feel even worse now, just been round to my friends house and they have tomato plants in their porch which are over two feet tall :( I think I am going to have to start using my paraffin heater in the greenhouse unless we get some sun soon!!

For some reason my runners and peas to an extent haven't done so well this year. Perhaps it's time for rotation again.
