I potted a nice big tuber of an hedychium about 5 weeks ago but it has not shown any sign of a shoot yet. Is this normal for hedychiums? I've never had one before. It's been in a heated propagator for the last week or so, but does it actually need the warmth?

Hi it will start to grow, they can be a bit slow at first. I just put mine in a pot the tops of tuber just showing above the compost or leave the hardier ones in the ground over winter, mine have loads of shoots now most about 5" tall. [IMG]

I think they shoot faster when established, so your new one Madahhila may take a little longer, the propagator should speed things up but dont keep it too wet as it could rot.
Some species are also earlier than others to shoot I find.

Thanks, I'll try to be patient. (No other option really!)
