I dont know what kind of lavender plant i have, probably the most common whatever that is [IMG]
I have never taken cuttings before of anything, and not even totally sure if i picked the right time of year (i'm a total novice at this) anyhoo, i really cut my lavender plant down as it's never been pruned at all in 2-3 years, and what i did was i removed the lower leaves and placed in cups of water-
will this produce roots? And if so when will i know to plant into pots? And can I plant and leave outside or do I have to keep them indoors untill they look hardy enough?

thanks for any advice, and the lavender is the back row, I am hoping for lots of plants so took cuttings of everything i had. [IMG]

I have been taking lavendar cuttings at the wrong time of year quite wuccessfully it seems! I always thought that if the sap was just beggining to rise, and the plant was beginning to show signs of growth - then this wojuld be the best time to take cuttings. I haven't tried the jar of water method - just taken the cutting, stripped the lower leaves, and put straight into a pot - most make it!

You could try taking half from the water, and putting them into pots - and see which works best. Ialso take the growing tips out - so the energy is put into roots and not into trying to grow tall!

It's likely to be Hidcote, MGN.

    thanks for your replies

oh dear walnut :( well i did say i was a novice, i'd better read that link and start keeping a book of notes i think.

jarbax (my hope!) i will try that and plant out half tomorrow and will see how they do - if nothing then i learned something anyway and that was to not dive in.

thanks dendrobium, it might be, i really dont know but it's been a good one anyway that has looked after itself for a long time now so must be quite hardy.

i feel such a phoeny here as i dont know plant names or anything, i think i'm going to struggle to keep up.

Totally agree with Walnut - and sometimes diving in is the best way! Often the best way to learn is by trial and error (in my case a lot of error!) It is often the 'errors' which give interesting results!

Good luck with your lavendar, and let us know what happens!

P.S. I can't remember the names of the two lavenders I re-planted - could be hidcote and munstead - but who knows, and infact, it's not really until they flower that you can really tell anyway! There are hundreds of varieties - I have a very wee collection - my favorites being 'little seal' (my son's name is Ronan - which is gaelic for 'little seal', and I just love the name 'dilly dilly' - but ask me which is which... :D

walnut, thanks for the encouragment. i dont know about being able to soon give you good folks advice, but give me a few years and you never know ;) I do have a lot of gardening books although you would never know by how little i know!

I found a pic of my lavender bush jarbax (as it looked before the pruning!) and I planted half out today, so we'll see how they progress. Maybe you know which one it is? It was a freeby a few years ago and is about the same size as it was. I was told it would grow big but it didnt, but I love the smell of lavender.

these are what i have on my doorstep, they take no looking after and are well sheltered.

the lavender is the one in the middle of the picture
