I have a dead patch on my Lavender Stoechas Gengal. To qualify it the stems from the bottom to the top are all brown and brittle. All the rest of the plant has healthy geen shoots above the brown and I have just pruned the plant so it is ready for the spring. Do I cut out this 'dead' patch altogether right down to the bottom or do I leave it. Help on this would be much appreciated.

If it's dead, not much point in leaving it, Charlie! The dead wood will get diseased and it will spread down to the healthy plant. Chop it out ASAP and make sure you get down to healthy wood. It happens to my lavender on occasions. Usually damage or some such.

As far as I can tell Michaelmasdaisy it is all dead right down to where the soil starts - its on one side of the plant. Will healthy stuff fill in the gap?

Strip the dead stuff down as far as it goes, included any dead root you find. New growth from the adjacent stems might aquire the space vacated but old wood doesn't usually produced my new growth. But if it's dead anyway, what choice have you got!
