I've recently planted a boarder strip of young 6" high Munstead plants and to get a continuous row effect they say space at 12" or less.

What effect so you want, several plants with space around them / just touching or a totally solid mass effect which might need a dozen or more plants, depending on variety, which I have little knowledge of apart from the common cheaper ones like Mustead or Hidcote.

Think the size they get to is down to how you prune them, do it properly and they will stay reasonably sized and good looking plants, ignore pruning and they just end up oversized and messy looking.

:dunno: If they grow to the same size as my Hidcote, each shrub will need about a metre width. They might be a bit squashed in there.

They look good, though if they do grow too big together you could easily lift a couple out.

Bet they cost around a fiver each ? was looking to fill a narrow-ish 10 mtr boarder with lavenders so ordered some plug plants last summer with a view to growing them on in the greenhouse over winter and plant out this spring.
However the first batch received were infected, seems young lavenders are very susceptible to such transport problems, VM were good, they sent out a fresh batch straight away on receipt of this photo.

I would have planted 7 including one in the centre. A couple of reasons.....firstly any even number usually looks too "square" and unnatural. Secondly, 6 with 1 in the centre occupies the whole space and gives extra space to fill out. Use the "spare" elsewhere. They will easily lift and replant. :)

I'd certainly go for Hidcote, they make lovely plants when mature. As Tetters has said they need a bit of space and yours will I think, be a bit cramped.
It's not difficult growing from seed, though obviously takes a bit longer before you get plants of a decent size.
You'll have bees galore this summer!

I've tried twice now to grow lavender. Our winters seem too harsh even with cold frame protection.

                          Zone envy again .....

Well mine were those mini plugs (the size of ur fingertip type) i've just nipped put the ends to make them bushy-wasn't precious about it as they were only cheap. They're not bad-not as good as the ones woo has bought but not bad for the price/effort.
