I have just been given a beautiful long container of Lavender Toscane that is presented like a houseplant. What I need to know is: can this be kept as an indoor houseplant or does it need to go out in the garden??

Also, can I propagate it by dividing it and planting one half in the garden??

    Hi

you will be able to have in for a few days but its a outdoor plant , with lavender you cant split them its best to take cuttings now , I dont know how hardy Toscane is and I have a feeling it wont take our winter if harsh , I am sure I have read it wont take any minus temperatures with this variety.

Cuttings kept in a greenhouse over winter is best ...

Pretty sure Lavandula 'Toscane' is a stoechas, so -5C is about the limit of what it will take, and it will hate having its feet wet - so clay soil etc. is not good. It will be happy living in a pot though, brought into some protection for the winter - frost free greenhouse / unheated conservatory would be ideal, or bring in when foul weather is forecast.
