    Hi Fellow Gardeners!

I have just joined and this is my first post. I am after a bit of advice. I have recently fitted a 750L water butt on the side of my property and I would like to put liquid lawn feed in it so that I can water the grass and a laurel hedge. The question is, can I use lawn feed on a laurel hedge, or will it be useless or detrimental?

    Thank you in advance!

    Cheers
    Andy

    Welcome Andy!
You can use the lawn feed on a laurel hedge, but in my experience they are rather robust anyway! If it makes it easier to feed your other plants then it certainly won't harm the hedge. I tend to only add feed when I fill my watering cans, from the butt, that way I can use the appropriate feed eg high nitrogen for leafy stuff.

That's great CarolineL, thank you for that. I am watering on a large scale of a 200m lawn with a 40m laurel hedge so it will be easier to put the feed in the water butt. As I am a drainage engineer by trade I have a drain jetter that I connect up to the water butt and I use it to water the area.

      Hi Pete,

No, I am going to try lawn magic on the lawn and hedge.

      Many thanks

      Andy

Oh good point @pete - a lot of lawn treatments are combined aren't they? The laurel wouldn't like the weedkiller! I forgot because i just never feed my grass (it doesn't deserve to be called a lawn...)

I looked up Lawn Magic and I couldn't see a mention of weedkiller.

I wouldn't put the feed into a butt unless you planned to use it all quickly. Assuming your butt is filling from a rainwater downpipe then you will have an overflow, that means it will get diluted and washed away each time it rains.

In all probability, your laurel hedge already feeds from the lawn! Proprietary lawn feeds are relatively expensive, to feed the laurels a 20-10-10 granule would be fine.

            Hi JWK,

as mentioned my water butt is capable of holding 750 litres and I will put in 2.5litres of lawn magic into the water butt when it has 250 litres in it, then I would water the lawn with all of the water.
I plain to do this on the 1st of May and 1st of June.

            Many thanks

you need to calculate the amount of fertiliser and the rate of application over an area per m2 to really get a good application on your lawn following the correct guidelines.
Watering cans never really work out well as they will never give the correct amount where as a knapsack with the correct nozzle and width is far better plus you are able to correctly apply the right amount which avoids under or over application.

what is the application rates for the product?
Is the 200m2 you are treating.

I found one product called lawn magic but your calculated amount is not correct for the one I found.

if the butt is getting filled with rain water it will over flow and waste your fertiliser that you add

              Hi Spruce,

The water butt holds 750 litres, it would be a while before it overflows.

What I have done is marked on the water level the level of 250litres, when I am ready to treat the lawn I will lower the water to this mark then add the correct amount of lawn magic and then spray the lawn. As mentioned, I am a drainage engineer, so I can mix the feed into the water and then spray the lawn.

              Many thanks
              Andy

Any chance you can link the product for me to have a peep please. If not what is the required amount of fertiliser per ltr, if not sure just add what they state.

the one I’ve seen states 100ml per 5Ltr covers 10m2 .You said and I’m guessing it’s 200m2 as you would have squared it.

so we know for the water side it will be 0.50ltr per m2 so 200m2 would require 100ltrs.

with the fert it states 100ml per 5Ltr so that’s 20ml per ltr.

So the amount required for 100ltrs would be 2ltrs to treat an area of 200m2.

that’s at it’s given NPK rate on the liquid to be achieved at a 1mm covering over the area.
