Well if you have read my previous posts then you will know that my newly turfed lawn has been one problem after another - meadow grass, grass dying, poor drainage, toadstools, blunt lawnmower etc.

The latest development is Asparagus!!!! I noticed a chopped spear on the grass the other day and just assumed it had been chucked into the garden by next door or dropped by a bird or something. Yesterday standing tall was an asparagus spear growing out of the ground under the apple tree!

Wonders will never cease! - Now if there was as much asparagus as there was meadow grass I would have a great crop and be quite happy with my new lawn - unfortunately it has just been the two spears so far!!!

Ellie, why not dig the crown up and plant it in the veggie plot? It would be easy enough to repair the damage to the lawn. David.

I agree, I don't envy you the other problems but I wish my lawn would sprout asparagus!

This is what is so strange as we moved into the house almost two years ago. The asparagus is next to an apple tree that used to have strawberry plants underneath it and a few dafodills (no asparagus). The person who had the house before us had done very little with the garden which had been the same for years and I just can't see that she would have planted Asparagus!

That aside this April we had the whole garden, dug up, landscaped and returfed! The asparagus is growing out of the new turf! I have lopped it off now. Probably no point digging up as there is only one plant so I can't imagine much of a crop! There could have been more of course which have just been mowed, this one survived the mower as it is next to the tree at a time when we had been slack with the strimming!

Anyway I like suprises. Unfortunately having started from scratch with most of the garden I doubt we'll get many more.

    Hi there Ellie,

My hubby is totally envious of your asparagus, he wants to know if you could courier it to him so he can steam it and add butter [IMG]
