    Hi,

as a new gardener I'm looking for a few pointers.

I moved home to a new property, the front garden was in disrepair and and un even. I have dug the ground down 1 metre. Place a layer of drainage gravel 50mm thick and covered with teram sheeting. After this I have back filled the area with top soil and leveled it and rollered it flat. I then sowed the grass seed (B&q own make orange box) that was about 7-8 weeks ago. the grass is comming on great and has had several cut. Some of the areas are patchy with bald bits. How do I fix this ?? do i gently hoe the areas and reseed or is there an easy way or even a correct way.

only way that you can sort the bald patches is to re-seed as you mentioned, and make sure that the seeds are covered with a thin layer of topsoil, and water once or twice a week if it does not rain

also, don't mow too short yet (I would leave the grass to grow 3 inches tall before mowing, then only mow the top inch (leave the grass at 2 inches tall till spring)... and ensure that the lawnmower blades are sharp, otherwise it will 'rip' the grass

7 weeks ago was fairly recent and the roots need to establish

I would also look at adding some slow release Scotts Autumn lawn builder after the last cut, and before the cold sets in:

there are some guys on this forum who are/were groundsmen, so am sure they will advise (My advice is based on my own experience, and I'm still learning)
