    Hello everyone,

I am a complete novice at all aspects of gardening. I have cut grass a fair bit but as I've never owned a house with a reasonable size of garden I've never done anything with them. However, I have recently bought a larger sized home for my expanding young family and it has a good size garden for the little ones to run about in when they grow up a little.

I believe the garden/lawn was poorly looked after for the last couple of years and the lawn is extremely spongy and springy under foot. I think it is thick with moss and the grass is quite rough. I tried to drop the mower a notch from the highest point but the mower keeps nearly stalling if you walk too fast...... due to the thickness of the grass possibly.

I would like to improve the lawn and have it like a bowling green to improve the look of the house as well as for the kids. I am unsure what course of action to take or where to start. I did sprinkle lawn feed/weed killer to kill the moss and have ordered a scarifying cassette for my Suffolk punch drum mower after reading a little on the net about this but I need a lot of advice and help as to how to tackle this. The lawn is around 700m squared.

Any advice and or tips would be great.

    Cheers in advance.

    Ryan
