    hi guys

My mother has a problem with her new lawn it was laid a year ago, with retaining walls. Before it was gravel only with plants.

Over the year the lawn has got wetter and wetter. It has dropped to. It now contain mostly moss, a few large weeds and thin bladed grass.

I'm looking for advice of how to fix it. I've aerated it a number of time, just placed moss weed kill down.

Looks like it needs some drainage or raising up a good few inches.

As far as I know it's a heavy clay under the lawn. The lawn in flat to the level of patio, where the lawn has dropped this can be raise back to the level. But the water around the wall can't be.

Can anything be done to improve the drainage? My mother think lawn sand but I thought this would only sort the moss and do very little for drainage

Hollow tine aeration with sand brushed into the holes ? Maybe some autumn lawn feed to feed the grass roots .

You may need to put a length of perforated land drain under the lawn .

looks to me like you get run off from your patio and with the wall foundations it is simply creating an area where the water can't run away. If that's so and the problem has only appeared since building the raised wall you will need to find a way of allowing the water to flow away from the raised wall foundations.

Can you drill a few holes, under lawn level, through the retaining walls ?

Edit : Sorry just seen this poster is a few years old
