We are all being asked to make cuts due to other peoples mismanagement of the global economy at the moment.

No one wants the cuts from their particular area as we have all seen.

    This is my proposal.

No one is going to make you plow up your pocket handkerchief sized lawn in your urban semi, but if you have more than a quarter of an acre down to lawn then dip in your pocket, pay a tax on it or turn it over to Allotments to avoid the tax.

Yes, this smacks of Georgism politics but we are living in extraordinary times & when the crisis is over you can return the land to lawn again if thats what you think you really need,

Right now there are loads of people who are desparate for a bit of land to grow food.

In my locality there are acres of land put down to lawn, strips of land that were obviously part of small holdings that would have fed the families that are now producing nothing but grass clippings, left in the corner and not even used for compost.

There is a field in Curry Rival ( the next village to me) That could entertain 40 allotments easily. It just gets mown every year & now (for some unknown reason) has just had a hedge of leylandii planted right across it:DOH:

I don't like too much lawn, Ziggy, but you're bringing back the age of the window tax! There's lots of brown sites all over the UK that could be turned over to allotments. Unfortunately, the Councils seem to be turning tenants off allotments for economic reasons more and more. We've got to convince our local authorities that our allotments are as important as our forests and to provide more not less. You're right that there is "mis-use"
of green fields but it's no use opening up fields when properly established allotments are being closed by short sighted bean counters.

    :D

Sports fields would be exempt from the tax, as long as it could be demonstrated they were in regular use.

Spiders & Snakes by Jim Stafford- 1974, well done Harry

    Hey ziggy,
I knew you had your eye on my garden - but you can't have it!!! :heehee: :loll:

    On the more serious side:-
we already pay a tax for having a larger garden. It's called Council Tax. I have a three bedroom bungalow with a large garden and I appealed against my Tax of over £2,500. They turned it down because they said the property was worth more because of the large garden.

Of course, people with large lawns could easily overcome the Lawn Tax by turning some of it into shrubbery or have it as a 'wild' garden.

No one would allow people to traipse through their house in order to get to their 'Allotments'. What part of the garden would the 'allotment' holder be able to cross to get to it?

Where would they park their vehicles? It can't be on our road as it is too dangerous.

Of course, the government could raise additional taxes by charging people who do a lot of posting on forums. Whoops!!! That's me as well. :heehee:

    It's a great idea Ziggy.

This weekend I'll mostly be installing turnstiles to allow access to my lawn, 10 bob a go, lovely jubby.

It will be something like this: People queue and pay £5 to see pigeon

I think something has been overlooked here... maybe if we didnt tax lawns, but slapped a very HEFTY tax on the sale of farmers fields for even more housing development... or no tax if this land was turned into allotment sites which the farmer could profit from his own land by the obvious charges from allotment 'rent'

Only problem is the cr*p condition the farmer has probably left the soil in. :th_scifD36: considering all the pesticides and rubbish they pump into the ground.

:loll: Didnt even need to click on link... already read it... too funny!
