Hi folks, I need to raise my lawn lawn by 4 inches. Can I add 4 inches of topsoil over the existing lawn and then lay new turf onto this. Or should I remove the old lawn first and then add topsoil and new turf ?

    Hi Shah
Just found this site so sorry for delay in answering. Yes you can do that, all that will hppen is the old grass will rot down and form good loam/humus which support the new turf admirably.

Been there in a previous gardening existence and layed new turf on top of old to raise the overall height.

But I cut out the original turf and turned it over to help it rot - dunno whether it made it rot quicker by being upside down, but seemed like a sound idea at the time!

    New lawn looked splendid.
