Thought i would transplant some leeks today into my main plot now we have had a nice drop of rain.
Going to put a toilet roll inner down the hole , thought i read somewhere that you must keep it below the surface of thesoil.
    Can anyone dvise on this

I think the "keep it below" the soil is for things grown in loo rolls, or "pots" made from newspaper, because any paper/cardboard that sticks up above the soil acts a as a wick, and dries out the plant.

I have heard of using loo rolls to "line" the planting holes for leeks, but I'm not sure it serves any really useful purpose over just making a hole with a dibber, dropping the leek in, and watering-in (i..e do not back-fill the hole with soil)

P.S. Possibly a bit early to be planting out too ... but depends how "mature" your baby leeks are :)

Hi Kristen thanks for gen on cardboard tubes, have only put out 2 rows of 15 one row with tubes an inch under the soil and one row without.
I take your point about being a bit early get a couple of days of warmth and i get ahead of myself, but the ones iv'e put out were getting rather congested .
Got a 100 or so not as far advanced so can replace if worst happens (hope they'll be ok)
