    Hi Hammer
I have started my lettuce in an unheated greenhouse, but i don`t think you can grow to harvest, i think it would be too warm and it would bolt

Cast around a few web sites and i find gardenaction.co.uk gives a lot of helpful basic advice, but although you seem to be able to grow lettuce all year under plastic in the winter ,no one suggests the greenhouse

Why not try salad leaves instead? they are so easy to grow and you can get about four "cuts" from each plant before starting again. I plant mine in succession so that I have salad all summer long.
They are started off in the greenhouse but grown on outside....

    "what does bolt mean"

When it "runs to seed", rather than producing leaves. If you leave it long enough it will poroduce seed anyway, and a few may "bolt" before they should. Other than that plants tend to bolt when they are stressed - I think they say "Crickey, I'm dying I'd better produce some seed"; staying in a pot too long, before being planted out, is one of the causes and I expect that being too hot in a greenhouse would do it too. Early in the year would work well in the greenhouse though.

No need to grow salads inside this time of year. Sow seed in large containers (don't have to be too deep) It will only take a few weeks 'till you can harvest the leaves. Buy packs of mixed salad leaves for plenty of variation.
