I want to try and grow a few veggies this year in my new vegetable patch, I am looking at some different types of lettuce to start from seed, can anyone recommend any good, tasty varieties please? Also a good variety of cherry tomato? Thanks!

    Hi LCH,
try some of the following, have grown them, among others, and all are tasty, + attractive in the veg patch.
LOLLO ROSSA, SALAD BOWL, LITTLE GEM, ALL YEAR ROUND, ICEBERG, WINTER DENSITY...
Also sow a row of Rocket (eruca versicaria) if you like it
A nice cherry tomato is GARDENERS DELIGHT
A couple of nice normal tom's ALICANTE, & SHIRLEY F1.
    hope this is helpfull

Also lamb's lettuce, tiny spinach and beetroot leaves. I know they're not lettuce, but worth a try. Sometimes you'll see packets of seeds with mixed varieties. [IMG]

don't be tempted to put them out just yet, wait a 2-3 more weeks, keep your seedlings where they are, after that try to acclimatise to outdoor temperatures slowly, perhaps put them in a sheltered spot about noon for a couple of hours to start, unless it's frosty, slowly increasing the time outside.
you could prick them out if they get overcrowded into small pots, which would help them establish better

do not put manure in when you plant the lettuce, or any other plants, as it would tend to burn the roots, even if it it's well rotted.
always dig your manure into the ground a good 3 months before planting in the veg garden.
not to bad with plants that have a hard root stucture, ie roses etc..but always make sure it is WELL rotted

thanks for that - i didnt relise about the manure bit too!!
I was a little worried then as my partner had gone and got some bags of well kind of manure - it was from the local rabbit ctr and the bags mainly contained saw dust to be honist but weve mixed some of it up in the ground in a section of our olotment a few days ago.
Do u think this will be ok or have we wrecked that bit of the ground??

Does this also include manure you buy in bags from B&Q etc (with regards to burning roots) as this stuff seems to be well rotted?
