Whilst various varieties of lettuce seeds seem to be available, I cannot seem to find seeds for what I would call a 'traditional' lettuce (often called a round lettuce in the supermarkets) - can anyone point me in the right direction?

Do you mean an open one like Webb's Wonder or a closed one like Iceberg?:)

Scrub that, webbs wonder is a hearting one too, not sure what I was trying to think of:doh:

I usually grow Lollo Rosso, which is an open one. Its usually slug resistant, except for last year when the slugs even ate the plastic pots they were in.

Minefield will be about right - there are so many varieties; the third one down shows the one I am on about. Its not a cos, as they have longer leaves and have more heart to them; definitely an open type lettuce (is that what gets called a butter head?)

Not sure if the all year round is the one, but may well be the closest?

    The third one down says:

    "Round Lettuce
The traditional ‘British lettuce’ the round lettuce has soft mid-green outer leaves and a slightly crisper, paler heart."

I'm even more confused now, never head of "Round Lettuce" !!! or even that that is what a traditional British Lettuce is!, but I'm with you on Butter-head :)

See, that is my confusion. Whether I buy it from Tesco or Sainsbury's, they are always the same and I remember them being like that right from childhood; can I find seeds that match? Not a hope.

Indeed. I doubt that Supermarkets are selling Heirloom varieties (more likely modern F1's bred for convenience / consistency of getting them to market), but it might be worth looking at Heirloom varieties for the ones you remember from yesteryear?

      for example:
      http://www.realseeds.co.uk/lettuce.html

(this is not the same as the Real Seed Company who sell cannabis seeds!)

Marshalls, T&M, Unwins, Dobbies, Suttons, D.T. Brown, Mr Fothergills, Nicky' Nursery all agree that that is a Butterhead - some consistency at last :)

Vegetable Seeds .NET thinks its a "Summer Crisphead"
