Hi all, I have finally tried to grow some veg after homebase had carrots, lettuce, onion and peppers reduced to 50p each! Two weeks on all is going great but came home today to holes in my lettuce leaves  There seems to be some small black spider looking things on them, just pick them off or should I be spraying them? Thanks for any help.

I wouldn't spray leafy veg as you're going to be putting them in your mouth pretty soon and you can't give lettuce leaves a good scrubbing!

Well that's what I thought! I have been spraying my roses with half mouthwash half water but don't like the thought of minty salad!

It sounds more like slug damage. Have a look at the lettuces late at night, that's when slugs come out and do their damage. You can pick them off or use a few carefully sprinkled slug pellets if you're not organic.
