My son discovered the six Leveret's below whilst digging over his vegetable plot yesterday. Having been disturbed it looks like the mother has abandoned them. He's not managed to raise the local wildlife rescue centre so do you think there is any chance he can take over the raising of them. Any knowledge anyone has would be welcome please. I point out that he lives in America.

@Sheal I think these are baby rabbits and not Leverets as Leverets are born on top of the ground in what is known as a form which is just like a depression and I think they can more or less fend for themselves straight away unlike baby rabbits which are born in a burrow blind and helpless and so will depend on their mum to feed and keep them warm until they are old enough to venture above ground.

Woos Link is good and I hope that your son can help them if they are still alive if he found them yesterday as without milk they won't last too long:sad:

Good evening @Kandy :goodpost: you could be right my friend,I only know about Roses and mice:heehee:

The difference between rabbits and hares appears at the moment they are born. First of all baby-rabbits are called kittens, while baby-hares are called leverets. Rabbits are born completely helpless, naked and blind . Hares are born fully furred, able to see and capable of independent movement(photos. In fact hares can live on their own after one hour from they birth! Therefore their mothers feel free to leave them on the bare ground and hop away soon after the baby is born. Rabbit's mothers are much more careful and protective to their children: their line a nest with grass, bark and soft stems. Over this, they place a layer of hair plucked from their own bodies. When rabbit-mother leaves the nest, she covers the bunnies with more hair and dead plants to keep them warm and hidden from enemies.

Thank you @wiseowl, @Kandy and @Marley Farley for your help. A bit of confusion here now. They were found above ground and in amongst the nesting material which you can see in the picture, this would suggest they are Leverets. However, the information given on the links you have kindly posted and my own look around the interweb, including a look at images suggests Kandy is right and they are rabbits. So do we have a lazy Mrs. Bunny here that hasn't bothered to dig a burrow to have her young?

I'll keep you updated on these little creatures. :)

The babies made it through last night and were still alive and moving around this morning. Sadly not so when my daughter-in-law returned from work this afternoon. It would seem Mrs. Bunny had abandoned them.
