Been waitng to see these flowers open for weeks. I grew some Leycesteria from seed and was sure that when one flowered it was pure white. However, the flower disappeared before it properly opened so had to wait for this year (only baby plants you see.). Well now one has opened fully and as you can see there is no other colour in the flower as is usual. I can find one mention of this on the Internet so rather pleased with it. Now we shall see if the other ones I have are also pure white.

Am I right in thinking its mainly the bracts that most people see, and regard as the flower colour?

But yours does look particularly white.

Sorry Pal looks normal to me as Pete says it's the bracts that are purple.

Sadly my Connection to the Internet is so poor I cannot put up a picture of a normal Leycesteria, but they are different to this one. We saw one like this at Bodnant gardens labelled L.f.alba, but it was in an area since redeveloped and we could not find it last time we were there.

According to " The complete handbook of garden plants ", the flowers of Leycesteria ARE white, with red bracts. Sorry.

The bracts on this form are green, not purple/red

I have a picture of both mine and the normal one side by side and they are definitely very different. I cannot put it up at present, will do when the connection is working better.

Taken me nearly an hour to upload these to Photobucket and then on here.
As you can see they are very different flower spikes.
