I've got established Leylandii hedging down one side of my garden - been there for years and now I want to plant the same on the other side. What size is best for planting - I thought to get plants about 3 ft high, but my gardening neighbour says I would be better getting smaller ones which are cheaper and will establish themselves and grow quicker and would probably be bushier - any ideas anyone, please? We're talking about 60 plants. Any info/ideas gratefully received. Thankyou.

if there is a huge saving to be made, buy the cheaper smaller ones, as they grow fast ...

just out of interest, how wide is your garden? ... i.e how far will the new hedge be from the other existing hedge?

and is your gardening friend/neighbour keen to have Leylandii bordering his property?

Clematis, Leylandii have a huge root spread. How close to buildings will the hedge be. Also how close is the existing one.

Garden is about 40 ft wide, so that's not a problem. My gardening neighbour already has the hedge there. My garden looks odd with hedge one side and nothing the other apart from a chain mesh; I've spoken to the other neighbour and he has no problem with us putting the hedge there - in fact he would welcome it, even though we will have 2 hedges to cut and he will have one. The hedge will be kept to a max of 6ft high.

Sheal - the hedge will be about 30 ft from the bungalow - we've actually got a huge garden - if I could remember how to put photos on here I could show you, but for the life of me I can't remember.

I just wondered whether you were aware of the damage the roots can do, the distance you are planting should be enough. :) My neighbours hedge just 15ft away has just been removed because of the damage it had caused to my drains and foundations. Keeping the height to 6ft will not limit the root spread unfortunately.
