When I was a kid, licorice was the cheapo sweet. The cheapest were the really chew licorice sticks (not the actually bits of wood, I mean the roughly 6 inch long black sticks of processed licorice).

    I loved them.

In Beamish, there is a vintage sweet shop where many of the sweets are made on site, and you can watch them do it. When I was there I bought a bag of assorted licorice sweets to share between me, the wife and son. Wife and son don't like them, hurray:)

Trouble is, I've got myself addicted. I could munch and munch on it, I'd forgot how gorgeous licorice is. I've been on t'internet and its actually quite expensive now. Its no longer 2p per 6 inch stick.

Unfortunately their endeavours for authenticity don't extend to the price lists. I paid £2.50 for my bag of licorice sweets. In 1830 that would have probably bought me the shop.

I love licorice and spearmint/mints ... can't decided which I would give up if I could only have one ... :dunno:

Licorice and mint are both good for you healthwise, but licorice can be bad if eaten in excess (which I could easily do) but not sure that mint can.

Has anyone grown licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra)? ... I see Nicky's Seeds have it. I remember eating the roots as a child, bought from a store in Harpenden.

I used to really like that hard licorice, the kind that was round with a flattened area that had a name stamped in it.

These days I tend to go for the softer stuff, have been buying it in Morrisons, comes from Finland of all places.:dunno::)
