Lidl are doing their gardening weekend special again . Have a look at their website for what's on offer this year. I bought a cherry tree last year that's just started to bud up. Although I did buy one of their cheap perennial packs and ended up spending 49p on a bag of dirt because the bare root was missing. Ah well, I hope someone got 2 and had a nice surprise.

Craig, sorry to hear about your 'dirt', i had to smile though. At 49p you can't be to put out can you -?

I've just planted 2 shubs/bushes (?) from Lidl, actually it might have been Aldi [IMG] One is a Hedgehog Rose & the other Tamarisk (?), they cost Ã?£1.99 each i think, & the shoots are coming out already. The roots looked good too, although as you can tell I'm a beginner with all this :D . They're going to have a struggle though cos i'm getting hardly any sun in my garden yet & the blooming wind wont stop!.

Good luck with bargains, Craig & Nathan7.

    Cheers

I just got myself a lovely small fig tree for £2.50.

Some of the trees look excellent, just make sure it looks alive and thriving through the plastic. Poor things.

I had a look at the apple trees in Lidls, good quality and value for money, they had Jonah Gold, my favourie apple, but the reason I didn't pick one up was because it gave a list of pollenators it needed for fertilization so if none of these trees are in my area I presume it would not set fruit properly. Is this right? I know nothing about fruit trees.

Jonagold is what`s called a triploid, strongy, you don`t just want one other variety in your area belonging to the same pollination group, you want two. And I doubt very much if that`s going to happen.

Note that triploids will give a crop on their own, it will just be a lot smaller than if cross-pollinated.
