Hello all, I have a Charles joly lilac planted out in the garden from the end of last year, it has to be moved as I didn't realise they were quite aggressive root system and put it next to my septic tank but not sure where it can go so can it be planted in a pot for the patio? Tried googling it but can't find any answers.. Thanks!

How big is it @Clueless76 ? i think you would be OK to plant it in a large container as long as you don't let it dry out....if you can dig it up with as big a rootball as possible so that it doesn't know it's been moved and just use normal compost as i understand Lilacs thrive in poor soil conditions...Text books say to move in Autumn and Winter but you might just get away with it if you're quick...Don't forget the watering:thumbsup:

I don't know if you can see it at the back on left? With the ticket still attached? It's only a baby but after realising how big they get didn't know if being in a pot would eventually kill it?

It would need to be in a large pot Clueless76 and you could keep it in check but ideally it would be better off in the ground...have you another spot for it?:blue thumb:

I've got a few Lilacs in planters. One of them is a dwarf but the other two aren't. Only purchased those two last year so it's a bit of an experiment to see if they'll do well. They seem okay so far and the dwarf one I've had in a pot for several years is thriving.

Lilacs do need to be root-pruned every couple of years because their roots will grow to fill the pot fairly quickly.

I root pruned the dwarf one in spring last year and it was fine, although it would be best done when the plant is dormant.

Sounds complicated :/ the only other place I could put it in the ground is about two foot away from my oil tank.... It's above ground but are the roots likely to grow up and disturb the concrete it sits on? Or do they just grow down:what: I'm confused!
