About a week ago I had some lily bulbs delivered, and I forgot to take them out to the greenhouse. My house is not very warm, about 60-65F, but the bulbs have started sprouting and have lovely green 'noses' about 1" high. They are hybrid longiflorums- shall I put them in tubs and keep in the greenhouse, and plant in spring, or will they insist on growing once they've started?

I brought the prettiest of my cannas into the greenhouse for the winter [the flower is yellow spotted with red, and much bigger than my red flowered ones]. One of them is developing a flower- what's the best thing to do?

With your lily - I would suggest planting them in the container with good drainage, and popping them outside close against the house for shelter. Most spring bulbs outside are developing the first signs of growth. Its the temperature that checks them from getting going to soon.

Sorry, never grown canna's so can't help there.

Hi Liz - Re Cannas the RHS have a leaflet which is a bit confusing but essentially tells you to treat them a bit like dahlias - keep dry and cool occasionally water if too dry. Otherwise look at 'Harts' Cannas' web site - your Canna sounds like 'Picasso' - yellow with red spots.

My first attempt with overwintering cannas I was given totally different advice - fortunately they survived it! I won't tell you what it was, as it's NOT the best routine, involving keeping them damp....

Here's the Hart Canna link to the cultivation page - excellent stuff!
