Hello, just been out to the coldframe and my lilies which were about 5 inches tall are now gone! They were attacked by slugs which I have now found and got rid with pleasure.
But my question is will the shoots regrow? If I cover with some compost Or will they need to be chucked?
    Any help would be great
    Thanks

Sorry to hear about those slugs attacking your lillies
I have some growing in a planter and they are doing well. I can't answer about if yours will grow again, but I hope they do. Can slugs climb fences and pots? I think my tray has an anti slug lip? Not sure. IMG_00000035.jpg
I hope someone can answer your question soon. Here is a pic of mine. Not quite 5" though, so yours were doing well, compared to mine.

If it was the main shoot , I doubt will re-grow and if they did I wouldn't expect then to flower just end up with secondary leaves which if grown on would flower next year if looked after, all my Oriental & Asiatic lilies are out in the garden now so the leaves have toughed up which puts the slugs off eating them .

Still time to buy new bulbs they will romp away at this time of year.

I think we have all had disasters with slugs etc

@NorthantsGeezer if I were you I would plant up your lilies into much bigger pots or plant in the open ground a good 4 or 5 inches deep 12.7 cm , they dont like to be planted in shallow seed trays as the roots like to go deep.

    Hope this helps ...

      IMG_00000048.jpg I have taken a side shot :)
The tray is deeper than its looks in the first photo. Any good? I have run out of garden space

          No, not deep enough

you want a 6 inch pot 15.24 cm :spinning: happy lilies

They would easily transplant into a bigger pot a good handful of compost in the bottom and put the bulbs 3/4 down inside then top up with compost .

Something like this?? I was saving it for a hydrangea next month
I put those bulbs in a couple of weeks back, and buried them about 3" deep. What you see has grown up through that initial depth.

yes just what the Doctor ordered they would love it in there , your black tray is just too shallow for them to flower properly , I would imagine they would but wont last as long or look as good as they should up to you ? most garden centers have pots outside to give away I done the same thing a couple of weeks ago I had a boot full .

you could infill around the top with annual flowers once the lilies have gone over, the pot will still look good , a couple of french marigolds would do the trick

I will save the nice pot and pick up something cheaper for the lillies then :)
Do I angle them out of a round pot? Or stick em in vertically?

            Good question

some people plant vertically others point the growing tip slightly to face the outside of the pot helps with not staking so I have been told I do vertically , never had a problem .

I plant point upwards, on a bed of sand or grit if available, if not, so be it. The grit is to improve drainage below the bulb. The rationale behind planting sideways is to avoid water collecting in the bulb and rotting it. I have never found that lilies need staking.

Once the slugs have eaten the top out I'm afraid that's it for the year because that tip contains the lily bud which has been lying in wait inside the bulb all winter. Once it's gone it will need a whole summer to form another one and I'm not sure if it's capable of doing that - probably depends on how much leafy stem the slugs have left. It happens to several of my lilies each year, I lose track of them so I'm not sure if they flower next year. Mine are mostly in bucket sized black plastic pots or near.
